New Picasa Beats Original

Google's free Picasa 2 software offers numerous ways to sort your image collection, plus a handful of new image editing tools.
Google's Picasa 2 photo application is fast, fun, and free. I tested a shipping version of the app and found that it builds upon the original's strengths (speedy image handling) and improves upon its weaknesses (photo editing capabilities). However, while some users will embrace the app's take-charge method of organization, others will likely chafe under its rules.
The first time you launch Picasa 2, it gives you the option to scan specific folders on your system (like My Documents or My Pictures) or your entire hard drive and connected drives for photos. The software goes on to sort what it finds, showing folders for images that reside in the same places on the disk (for example, your Desktop) and then listing them by creation date. You can also sort folders by name or by recent changes.
The sorting process sounds straightforward, and for newer digital camera owners with small image collections it should work well. However, as someone who has already done some organization of my own growing collection, I found the program's propensity to reshuffle my folder hierarchies a bit frustrating.
Though Picasa 2's organizational talents left me unsatisfied, its improved photo editing chops pleasantly surprised me. In addition to basic fixes such as straighten, crop, and red-eye removal, new easy-to-use tools let you fine-tune highlights, shadows, and color temperature, plus apply tints and effects such as soft focus.
Picasa 2 is a sensible tool for those new to digital imaging, as well as for slightly more experienced photographers looking to upgrade from their camera's included software. Its speedy interface is fun to use, and you just can't beat that wonderful price.
