Empower Your E-Mail

Free downloads for encrypting messages and more.

PC World Editors

Want to give your e-mail program a little more oomph? Try some of these free downloads.

MailWasher v2.0.40. Have you ever wished that you could return spam to its sender and fool them into thinking that your e-mail address isn't valid? MailWasher lets you do just that. You can also choose to delete a message without downloading it. MailWasher retrieves information about all e-mail on the server.

PGP Freeware v8.0.2. Protect your e-mail from being intercepted and read by someone else. PGP Freeware v8.0.2 ensures that only the intended recipient can read your messages, and lets you "sign" them so that recipients can be sure the messages have come from you.

Eudora v6. Qualcomm's popular e-mail client manages multiple e-mail accounts and handles just about any attachment you're likely to receive. A robust search feature lets you find archived messages. You can use a word processor when you're composing messages, so you can check spelling, format text, and choose a font. The program features group file-sharing and support for Palm devices.

Nelson Email Organizer (NEO) v2.5. Don't wait until your in-box is a tangled mix of spam and important messages before you try to make some sense of it all. Nelson Email Organizer works with Microsoft Outlook and drops your messages neatly into designated subfolders in your in-box. Messages can be organized by date, correspondent, and attachment. You can also send messages to a To Do folder with three levels of priority. Manage spam by diverting e-mail that is not personally addressed to you to a Bulk Mail folder.

EPrompter v2.0 SR22. Do you have different e-mail accounts for friends, work, family, and shopping? Here's a simple way to check them all. EPrompter v2.0 SR22 is a free e-mail retrieval and notification utility that automatically checks up to 16 password-protected accounts for hundreds of domains (including AOL, EarthLink, Hotmail, Juno, Lycos, MSN, Netscape, and Yahoo).

MSGTAG. Sometimes you need to know whether a particular e-mail message was read at its destination. Most e-mail clients allow you to attach a delivery or read receipt to your e-mail. Your recipients can confirm the e-mail's arrival; some recipients, however, ignore receipt requests. MSGTAG sends back receipts without the recipients' knowing it, by riding alongside the e-mail client and watching for SMTP traffic.

WinOrganizer v2.6. This simple information manager lets you store names and addresses along with anything else you want to keep handy, including wish lists, photos, to-do's, and even passwords.
