WinAmp Audio Settings

Make your music jump using WinAmp's built-in audio equalizer.

Lenny Bailes

Nullsoft's WinAmp MP3 player includes a sound equalizer: A set of ten frequency sliders on the WinAmp Equalizer console let you accentuate or diminish bass, midrange, and treble playback in all your digital audio files. If you're not an audio pro, don't fret: WinAmp's preconfigured EQ Settings can make your music sound just right, no matter your speaker configuration or the shape of your room.

To use the WinAmp sound equalizer, click the On button at the upper left of the WinAmp Equalizer window. To switch preset configurations while a song is playing, click the Presets button, then select Load, Preset in the cascading menu. In the Load EQ Preset window, you're presented with a number of options. These adjust the sound based on how you listen (Laptop Speakers and Headphones), where you listen (Club, Party, or Large Hall), how the music was recorded (Live), or the musical genre (Classical, Reggae, Techno). Point to the settings you want to try and click the Load button. You'll see the EQ sliders move to apply the new settings. And it's easy to experiment with different mixes to find one that's optimal for your playback situation.

If you find a preset mix that you like for a particular song or Shoutcast station, you can assign it to load automatically when the song starts or when you tune into the Shoutcast server. Set the equalizer to the settings you want, then select the song or station in the WinAmp Playlist (while it's playing). Click the Preset button on the WinAmp Equalizer and select Save, Auto-load preset. Clicking the Auto button (next to the On button in the WinAmp Equalizer window) toggles this feature.
