Dell Dimension 4550

Sandwiched between the low-cost Dimension 2350 and pricier Dimension 8250 models, this $1479 system is a general-purpose PC that doesn't skimp on design. The 4550's midsize chassis is easy to open; it splits open down the middle after you press large oval buttons located on the top and bottom of the case. We found a roomy interior with fully accessible internal components. Handy features include latches on the drive bay cages that let you slide out drives without tools. Our Dimension 4550 had two open PCI slots and two drive bays (one internal, one external), as well as an additional memory socket--enough for users with modest expansion plans.
The software bundle we received has Microsoft Works Suite 2003 (not really useful as a business suite) and a couple of utilities (not a compelling set of home applications). Tack on another $100 for the small-business edition of Microsoft Office XP.
With the 4550, Dell shipped to us its 19-inch Dell M992 CRT, which currently holds the number four spot on our Top 10 19-Inch Monitors chart. It delivered sharp text and nicely saturated colors. The sturdy, redesigned keyboard matches the system well, and now includes a set of audio controls built into the top-right corner. A large, sensitive knob adjusts volume levels. Hot-keys are cast in glossy black with word descriptors. Unlike previous keyboards we've seen from Dell, this one felt slightly mushy; we had to press the keys harder than we would have liked. The set of midlevel, Altec Lansing ADA 745 speakers includes a subwoofer and four statuesque satellites with grilled-mesh front panels. With color-coded ports and connectors, they were a breeze to set up and produced pleasing sound, with full-bodied bass notes. Dell provided first-rate system documentation, including a setup poster and a user manual that's specific to the 4550. It's replete with detailed illustrations and thorough chapters on troubleshooting and on adding components.
Solid, capable, moderate in all things, the Dimension 4550 is the quintessential Dell business PC.
