Taking AIM at Viruses

Integrate AIM with your antivirus software.

Joel Strauch

Integrating AOL Instant Messenger with your virus scanning software will allow you to check incoming files for viruses-useful if you regularly need to accept incoming files from other AIM users.

To add virus-scanning abilities to AIM, you must already have an antivirus application installed. Click My AIM, Edit Options, Edit Preferences, and then select the Virus Checker tab. Click the Browse button under Virus checker, and locate your virus program's executable file on your hard drive. For example, if you use McAfee VirusScan, it calls itself Scan32.exe by default. Norton Antivirus shows up as Navw32.exe on your hard drive.

Make sure to fill in the boxes in front of "View Antivirus Warning dialog" and "Check files for virus after transfer." Once you click OK, AIM will now scan all incoming files and alert you if it detects a virus.
