Calculate on the Cheap

Use online tax services to calculate your return, then fill out the paperwork by hand.

Kathy Yakal

If you're preparing your taxes using an online site like Quicken TurboTax on the Web, you don't have to pay anything unless you print or electronically file your final return. This means you can use these sites to step through the preparation and processing of your forms and then stop short of filing through them.

You can download and print forms in Adobe Acrobat format from several sites, including the IRS Web site, and then fill them in using the calculated forms and schedules you already filled in on the Web. So long as you don't mind the double data entry, you get the added benefit of knowing that your calculations are accurate.
