Fujitsu Readies Nocona-Based Servers

Systems will use 64-bit version of Intel's Xeon processor.

Robert McMillan, IDG News Service

Fujitsu Computer Systems this week plans to unveil upgrades to the company's Primergy tower and rack-mounted servers that will use the 64-bit capable version of the Xeon processor, code-named Nocona.

The company is set to announce two new tower servers, called the Primergy TX200 S2 and TX300 S2, as well as two rack-mounted servers that include the 64-bit processor, the Primergy RX200 S2 and the RX300 S2.

In addition to the new processors, the S2 systems will also include a redesigned cooling system that features bigger fans and air tunnels designed to double the amount of heat the systems can dissipate, says John Rodriguez, product manager for Primergy.

Because of a Nocona feature called thermal throttling, which slows down processor performance under high temperatures, the cooling system will also improve the S2 systems' performance, he says.

System Specs

The TX200 S2 will support as much as 12GB of DDR1 (Double Data Rate) memory and will come with Xeon processors running at between 2.8 GHz and 3.4 GHz. The clock speed of the TX300 S2's chips will range between 3.2 GHz and 3.6 GHz, and it will support as much as 16GB of DDR2 memory.

Pricing for the systems will start at $2219, Rodriguez says.

Both rack-mounted servers will ship with 2.8-GHz to 3.6-GHz processors and will support as much as 16GB of memory.

The 1U (4.4 cm high) RX200 S2 will include two Ultra320 SCSI (small computer system interface) hard drive bays. The 2U RX300 S2 will support as many as six hard drives. The hard drives will store between 36GB and 300GB of data each, Rodriguez says.

Pricing for the rack-mounted servers starts at $2602.

The new servers will begin shipping worldwide within the month, Rodriguez says.
