Dialing Up on the Road

Save yourself a headache or two when you're dialing in from Kalamazoo.

Wayne Kawamoto, special to PC World

When you're on the road and need to change your settings to a local access number, don't create an entirely new connection--just edit your existing one. Double-click My Computer, double-click Dial-Up Networking, right-click the icon for the connection you want to change, and select Properties. Enter the new phone number and click OK to save your new settings.

Extra tip: Before you enter a new number, you might want to save the current one to a text file so you won't have to look it up when you get back home. Select Start, Programs, Accessories, Notepad, type your home access number into the Notepad window and select File, Save. Name this file something like home connection.txt and save it to your desktop.
