Xerox Updates Color Laser Line
Printing speed jumps with Phaser models 6250, 3450; multifunction unit also debuts.Eric Butterfield, PCWorld.com
Xerox is releasing two laser printers it promises are much faster--yet cost about the same--as their predecessors.
New are the Phaser 6250, a fast color laser printer available in several configurations, and the monochrome Phaser 3450. Xerox is also releasing the WorkCentre PE16 multifunction device. All models are available now from Xerox and its resellers.
Color Boost
The Phaser 6250 color laser printer prints up to 26 pages per minute, and is targeted at workgroups of 5 to 20 people, says Brent Deuth, product marketing manager. The printers in the Phaser 6250 family are replacing those in the Phaser 6200 line, which is rated at up to 16 ppm.
The Phaser 6250 comes in five models, as opposed to the Phaser 6200's four choices. Xerox added the new DT model because some customers wanted expanded paper capacity from a desktop laser printer without having to buy a floor-standing model, according to Rob Houston, a Xerox spokesperson. The 6250DT, which retails for $3399, is a desktop printer with 512MB of RAM standard and 600-sheet paper capacity.
The 6250 series of printers range in estimated retail price from $1999 to $3899, the same price range as the four Phaser 6200 models. Through the end of September, however, Xerox is offering a $300 rebate on three of the four Phaser 6200 models to drop the price below the predecessors; no rebate is offered for the basic 6200/B.
Other New Models

imilarly, Deuth says the Xerox Phaser 3450 black-and-white laser printer will churn out up to 25 ppm, versus the 17 ppm Phaser 3400 it is replacing. The three new models carry estimated retail prices ranging from $549 to $899--a little pricier than the two Phaser 3400 models they replace.
Xerox also announced its WorkCentre PE16 multifunction device, which lists for $599. The MFD prints up to 16 ppm and copies at 17 ppm, according to the company. The PE16 prints and copies in black-and-white at up to 1200 dots per inch, and scans color images at up to 2400 dpi.
