Sony Corp. is offering to replace part of the casing on some models of its DSC-T5 digital still camera because the metal coating may peel away and scratch or cut the skin of users.
The DSC-T5 went on sale in September 2005 and the problem potentially affects about 350,000 models of the camera, said Ryoko Takagi [cq], a spokeswoman for Sony in Tokyo.
The problematic coating is that on the bottom of the camera. The first report came in October 2005, a month after the camera went on sale, when a user reports a cut from the coating. Takagi characterized the injury as "like a paper cut." In June this year a user ended up with a piece of metal stuck between their nail and finger and required minor surgery to remove it.
This most serious case has prompted Sony to offer users free replacement of the bottom casing of the camera. Details of the offer, which is not a recall, can be found on local Sony Web sites around the world.
